El Grito De Poetas
I was a little late to Luchadoras 3 this weekend because I was shooting a poetry writing session with El Grito De Poetas . El Grito, a group of spoken word performers and educators from NYC, use spoken word poetry as a tool for empowerment and cultural understanding. The event was organized in part by the NC Dream Team for a group of about 20 area high school youth they’ve been teaching how to organize.
I have to say too that the event inspired me and reaffirmed my motivation for working on this project. As each teen shared his or her writings—all deeply personal—with the group, tears and bloodshot eyes were seen around the room. The youth, many strangers when they walked in the room, were now connected through these personal narratives. I’m working on this project to inspire the same sense of connectedness. We are all human, and our narratives have the power to bring us closer together.
